The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade John K. Andrews (NSN: 0-161431), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in the performance of his duties as Officer-of-the-Deck in the U.S.S. ARCHERFISH (SS-311) during the FIFTH War Patrol of that Submarine from 30 October to 15 December 1944. His skillful navigating assisted his Commanding Officer considerably in conducting attacks which resulted in sinking more than 25,000 tons of enemy shipping. His calm manner and devotion to duty contributed materially to the success of his vessel. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to the officers and men in his ship and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
