    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander John Douglas Andrew (NSN: 0-71303), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. AULICK (DD-569), during operations in Leyte Gulf and Surigao Strait, Philippine Islands. Commander Andrew’s ship participated in the occupation of Leyte as a unit of the Fire Support and Bombardment Group, performing Screening Duty in dangerous waters, continually subjected to enemy mortar fire and air attacks, during the period from 19 to 24 October 1944. On the nights of 24 – 25 October, his ship participated in the Battle of Surigao Strait. By his courage, perseverance and determination he brought his ship through, contributing to the successful completion of the mission. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
