Burkle, United States Navy, was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States while assigned to the Defense Atomic Support Agency, Washington, D.C., from 7 August 1965 to 31 August 1967, as Deputy Director (Operations and Administration), Armed Forces Radiobiology Institute and later as director, AFRRI.
