Smyth, United States Navy, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight on 30 June 1966, while engaged as Section Leader in the second division of an A-4 aircraft attack element in a strike against Bac Giang petroleum storage area near Hanoi, North Vietnam.
