Bird, United States Navy, was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States from 9 November 1964 to 18 May 1967, as Commander Naval Forces Marianas, as representative of the Commander in Chief Pacific in the Mariana-Bonin Islands, and as Commander of Task Forces 34 and 94.
