The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Commander Dwight E. DeCamp, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as strike flight leader of eight A-1H aircraft on 11 February 1965. Commander DeCamp launched from U.S.S. RANGER (CVA-61) against an enemy target at Chanh Hoa, North Vietnam. Despite adverse weather and intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire, he led his flight to the target and into a glide bombing attack. The bombs exploded within the target area, starting numerous fires. Commander DeCamp retired, rendezvoused and returned his flight undamaged to the carrier.
