    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Charles P. Amerman (NSN: 0-263477), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in operations against an enemy carrier task force in waters surrounding the Philippine Islands, 25 October 1944. As pilot of a carrier-based fighter plane he bombed and strafed enemy warships scoring a probable bomb hit on a carrier and inflicting damage on a battleship and cruiser. His determined attacks were made in the face of intense, continuous and accurate anti-aircraft fire and materially contributed to the defeat and routing of the enemy’s fleet. His skill and courage were at all times inspiring and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
