James Webb was a member of the U.S.S. Perch, which was scuttled on March 3, 1942 after being seriously damaged in a prior engagement with Japanese Naval Forces. (It was the first U.S. Submarine lost in the war.) Subsequently captured by the Japanese, he was interned as a Prisoner of War.
