Headquarters, U.S. Army Troops, APO 726 (Attu Landing Force), General Orders No. 31 (1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Fred M. Barnett, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, attached to the 7th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 25 May 1943, at Attu, Aleutian Islands, Territory of Alaska. Pinned down by an entire battalion by Japanese snipers and two machine gun emplacements, Private Barnett filled his pockets with grenades and jumped up, his rifle firing. Dashing through heavy fire, he killed the snipers with grenades, closed in on one machine gun position an annihilated the entire crew. Out of ammunition, he plunged toward the second stronghold, got through, and bayoneted or beat to death every Japanese in the trench. He was officially credited with killing at least 20 of the enemy. Private Barnett’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
