A Catholic Priest of the Archdiocese of Portland, Oregon, Richard Carberry was commissioned a U.S. Army chaplain assigned to the Philippine Islands prior to the beginning of World War II. For his heroism during the fighting on Bataan he was awarded two Silver Stars. He was captured at the fall of the Philippine Islands in May 1942, and held as a Prisoner of War, initially in the Philippine Islands. In December 1944, he and other Prisoners of War boarded the Enoura Maru, a Japanese “Hell Ship” for transport from the Philippine Islands to Japan. He was wounded when the Enoura Maru was bombed by American planes that did not realize the ship was carrying American prisoners on January 9, 1945, and he died a few weeks later from his wounds.
