Fred Brown was a crewman aboard the Gunboat U.S.S. Asheville (PG-21), which was sunk by the Japanese on 3 March 1942. He was the ONLY member of the Gunboat to survive the sinking and was captured and interned at the Makassar POW camp in Java, but died of Pellagra while still in captivity three years later on March 18, 1945.
