The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Commander Nils W. Boe (NSN: 0-106752), United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as pilot of a fighter plane attached to Fighter Squadron ONE HUNDRED NINETY-THREE (VF-193), aboard the U.S.S. PRINCETON (CVL-23), during action against enemy force sin the vicinity of Sangnong-ni, North Korea, on 23 June 1952. Lieutenant Commander Boe, leading a 14-plane strike, against a vital hydro-electric plant, sighted the target beneath a broken cloud layer, and despite the intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire, directed his aircraft in a glide bombing run to score direct hits which resulted in the total destruction of this important installation. Lieutenant Commander Boe’s exemplary conduct and steadfast devotion to duty were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
