The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant Henry Morris Marshall (NSN: 0-61498), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession on the occasion of a tragic accident on board the U.S.S. CASSIN, on 18 August 1937. While the fireroom was still filled with steam and subjected to intense heat, Lieutenant Marshall, without hesitation, entered the fireroom from the weather deck by way of the starboard airlock and succeeded in passing a line around an injured Navy Yard workman, thereby effecting his removal from the fireroom. After a few moments on deck he returned to the fireroom and assisted in the rescue operations until again weakened by the heat he was forced to the weather deck. He subsequently continued his search for injured men until he was in a very weakened condition and was sent on deck, but only after all living personnel had been removed. After partially recovering from the effects of the heat and steam vapor, he returned to the fireroom for a third time where he remained until all post-accident operations were completed. His action on this occasion characterized conduct far above and beyond the ordinary call of duty.
