The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Ensign Darl W. Jewell, United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as a Pilot in a Fighter Plane of Fighter Squadron ONE HUNDRED THIRTEEN (VF-113), embarked in U.S.S. PHILIPPINE SEA (CVA-47), during operations against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 15 May 1952. Participating in an aerial strike against vital enemy industrial and transportation installations, Ensign Jewell vigorously pressed home repeated attacks on a strategic road bridge in the face of intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire, and succeeded in destroying the bridge and two trucks. Continuing the attack, he effected the destruction of a large factory and five adjacent boats and boatways, and the silencing of an active gun position which was endangering the other aircraft in his strike group. By his outstanding airmanship, cool courage and gallant devotion to duty, Ensign Jewell upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
