The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to First Lieutenant Steven M. Clifton, United States Marine Corps, for heroism while participating in aerial flight while serving as Co-Pilot of a CH-46E Helicopter, Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron ONE HUNDRED SIXTY-ONE (HMM-161), Marine Aircraft Group 16, Third Marine Aircraft Wing, I Marine Expeditionary Force, United States Marine Corps Forces, Central Command, on 5 July 2004, in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. First Lieutenant Clifton’s heroic actions in the face of danger saved the lives of Marines and Sailors. Minutes after lifting off from Al Taqaddrum, Iraq, his aircraft came under enemy fire wounding him and the pilot. Realizing that the Aircraft Commander had been seriously injured from enemy small arms fire, he assumed control of the helicopter and executed evasive maneuvers. Ignoring his own injuries, he directed the first aid efforts in the cockpit while simultaneously flying to his point of departure. First Lieutenant Clifton navigated the aircraft out of the high threat area despite the loss of electrical power, a flash fire in the cabin area and degraded flight characteristics. Displaying courage, poise and superb situational awareness in spite of personal injury and extreme adversity, he returned the aircraft and crew to safety. By his superb airmanship, inspiring courage, and loyal devotion to duty in the face of hazardous flying conditions, First Lieutenant Clifton reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
