The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Gordon Erving Barto (MCSN: 0-11042), United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a pilot and flight leader of a Marine Fighting Squadron in combat against Japanese forces in the New Ireland and New Britain area from 28 July 1944 to 30 November 1944. Captain Barto flew on numerous and extended raids against strongly defended enemy bases. During his tour of duty, he destroyed one radar station, one pill box and personnel, two troop barges and nine trucks, by strafing and bombing. Captain Barto developed a maneuver used by fighters enabling them to maintain proper position over bombers while bombers are turning, still maintaining a defensive weave. He caused inestimable damage by strafing and bombing enemy supply and bivouac areas. His exceptional flying ability, outstanding personal courage and indomitable fighting spirit were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
