Thomas McHugh enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve in 1938 and was called to extended active duty in 1940, being integrated into the regular Marine Corps inh May 1943. From June 29, 1962 to July 16, 1965 he served as the Marine Corps top noncommissioned officer as the 3d Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps. His personal decorated include the Navy Commendation with Combat “V” and the Purple Heart.
