Headquarters, Ameical Division, General Orders No. 12531 (September 15, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Specialist Fourth Class Daniel Gomez Rangel (ASN: US-67181755), United States Army, for heroism in the connection with ground operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Rangel distinguished his-self by exceptionally valorous actions on 15 July 1970 while serving with B Troop, 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry. On that date, the troop was conducting routine combat operations when it came under heavy fire from a well-entrenched enemy force. Reacting immediately and with complete disregard for his personal safety, Specialist Rangel left the relative security of his armored personal carrier and joined his comrades in an assault against the enemy positions. Heedless of the danger involved, he exposed himself to the hostile rounds while maneuvering against the insurgents. Despite the fierce resistance, he moved to within meters of the enemy bunker and engaged the hostile soldiers with rifle fire and fragmentation grenades. During the direct attack, he was wounded in the shoulder by a hostile round. Ignoring the pain of his injury, he contributed greatly to the overall success of the mission. Specialist Fourth Class RangelÕs personal heroism, professional competence, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division and the United States Army.
