The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) John Lloyd Deen (ASN: 0-446025), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 175th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in France, on 15 July 1944. When the rifle company which his heavy machinegun platoon was supporting was pinned down by enemy fire, First Lieutenant Deen, without the slightest consideration for his own safety, proceeded to the forward elements of the company. While so engaged he was wounded, but refused to be evacuated until he had picked out a suitable position for his guns. First Lieutenant Deen was in the process of leading his section into place when he was shot again and killed. The inspirational courage displayed by First Lieutenant Deen reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
