“Work Horse of the Western Front – The Story of the 30th Infantry Division” By Robert L. Hewitt

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant James Anderson Peth (ASN: 37629127), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 22 November 1944, in Germany. When his unit was being exposed to intense artillery and small arms fire, Sergeant Peth noticed a wounded man 300 yards to the front motioning for help. Sergeant Peth and a companion responded to the wounded man’s need without hesitation. Completely disregarding their own safety, the left the protection of their slit trenches and bravely crawled forward under the incessant fire to the side of the helpless man. They administered first aid for his wounds and carried him back to their lines. The courage displayed by Sergeant Peth and his companion and their unselfish concern for the welfare of a wounded comrade reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
