“Work Horse of the Western Front – The Story of the 30th Infantry Division” By Robert L. Hewitt

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant William H. Jones, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the European Theater of Action in 1944 and 1945. Communications had been cut between the battalion commander and his headquarters during an attack of a battalion of the 117th Infantry Regiment. The communications sergeant and another sergeant had been wounded in an attempt to string a telephone for the vital linking of commander and his troops. First Sergeant Jones volunteered to try to get through with a line in spite of the hazards of heavy artillery and sniper fire. Guiding a crew over a perilous route, First Sergeant Jones and his companions, through their determination and courage, succeeded in making contact with the headquarters. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Sergeant Jones, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
