“Work Horse of the Western Front – The Story of the 30th Infantry Division” By Robert L. Hewitt

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Louis A. Daugherty, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany, on 8 October 1944. Advancing with his Division inside the Germany border, First Lieutenant Daugherty was directing his unit’s mortar fire from an observation post inside a shell-torn building when the Germans in a counterattack, cut them off from the rest of the battalion. Encircled and with tanks firing on the stone-walled building, First Lieutenant Daugherty withdrew his men to the basement, but the enemy crept to an entrance and tossed down several hand grenades, causing four casualties. First Lieutenant Daugherty then engaged in a one-man counterattack. Several times he worked his way stealthily from his post to within firing range of the Germans and nine enemy fell before his fire, two dad and several wounded. As a result of his courageous example, the enemy never succeeded in capturing the position, and when the counterattacking force withdrew, First Lieutenant Daugherty and his men returned safely to their own lines. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Daugherty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
