The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant [then Staff Sergeant] Floyd M. Montgomery (ASN: 34390732), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 February 1945. After Technical Sergeant Montgomery’s company had crossed the Roer River, they started through a dense woods and encountered many booby traps and mines which caused many casualties, including his platoon leader and platoon sergeant. Quickly assuming command, Technical Sergeant Montgomery reorganized and calmed his men and, despite heavy enemy fire, he constantly exposed himself while urging them forward. His heroic actions so inspired his comrades that they drove quickly across the open terrain, engaged the enemy in an intense fire fight, and seized their assigned objective. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Montgomery, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
