(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) John W. Beach, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Forward Observer with field artillery, in Germany, during World War II. First Lieutenant Beach established an observation post in a trench. Three enemy tanks moved to within 45 yards and took up positions to support an enemy attack. Realizing the gravity of the situation, First Lieutenant Beach elected to adjust fire on them, exposing himself to enemy fire and direct observation from the tanks. A direct hit was scored on one tank, all three withdrew, and the attack failed to materialize. Through his coolness and courage, First Lieutenant Beach broke up a probable counterattack. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Beach, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
