(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Stephen Lee Shaefer, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 2d Armored Division, in support of Operation DESERT STORM in Kuwait, on 25 February 1991. Private Shaefer and a comrade moved to clear an Iraqi bunker. Under covering fire from his comrade, Private Shaefer rushed the enemy position and maneuvered through enemy fire and trip wires to close on the bunker. Under the covering fire of his comrade, he was able to get close enough to throw grenades to destroy the enemy position. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private Shaefer, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
