The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Dennis E. Maron (ASN: US-56706351), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Staff Sergeant Maron distinguished himself by heroic actions on 1 March 1969, while serving as a platoon sergeant with Company B, 2d Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a reconnaissance in force operation, Company B came under a heavy volume of fire from an estimated enemy platoon in well-fortified bunkers. During the initial onslaught of hostile weaponry, numerous casualties were sustained. With complete disregard for his own safety, Staff Sergeant Maron braved the intense enemy fire in order to rescue one of his wounded comrades. Although Staff Sergeant Maron was wounded while moving the disabled soldier, he successfully evacuated him to a safe location. Staff Sergeant Maron then directed his men as covering fire was provided for the injured men allowing for safe evacuation. His valorous actions were responsible for saving man’s life. Staff Sergeant Maron’s personal bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
