The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Second Lieutenant Michael John Joseph Jakobi, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life near Williams Air Force Base, Arizona, on 11 August 1981. On that date, Second Lieutenant Jacobi responded to a very serious vehicle accident and directed rescue efforts until authorities arrived on the scene. With complete disregard for his own safety, Second Lieutenant Jakobi, despite the hazard of a vehicle explosion, assisted in removing the injured driver from his burning vehicle, and rendered medical aid to a critically injured passenger who had been thrown from the vehicle. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Second Lieutenant Jacobi has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
