The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Captain Alan Paul Williams, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Box Elder, South Dakota, on 14 November 1980. On that date, Captain Williams witnessed the collision of a semi tractor-trailer loaded with jet fuel and a private automobile. With complete disregard for his own safety, and despite the hazard of an impending explosion, Captain Williams unhesitatingly pulled the burning truck driver away from his vehicle and also attempted to aid the other victim before an explosion impeded any rescue attempt. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Captain Williams reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
