The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Corporal Kenneth J. Christner (ASN: 36112691), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Headquarters Battery, 63d Coast Artillery Regiment (Anti-Aircraft), during a fire at Seattle, Washington, on 18 February 1943. Seeing an airplane crash into a nearby building, setting the building afire. Corporal Christner, with utter disregard of his own personal danger, entered the burning building and assisted in the rescue of several persons. In the course of his rescue efforts, he entered a room filled with live steam and assisted in extricating a man trapped by broken steam pipes. The heroism displayed by Corporal Christner on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
