Captain Hawkins distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of Company A, 2d Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 3d Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, in action against the enemy during the Battle of Fire Support Base RIPCORD, in July 1970. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Hawkins, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
