    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Frederick John Barofsky, United States Army, for gallantry in action in the Republic of Vietnam, on 15 September 1970. Captain Barofsky distinguished himself while serving as Commanding Officer of Battery C, 1st Battalion (Airmobile, 321st Artillery Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile), during a mortar attack on Fire Support Base BLITZ, Republic of Vietnam. When the firebase came under intense mortar fire. Captain Barofsky ran from the security of his bunker to the gun emplacements and directed his men in delivering counterfire. Although wounded by impacting rounds, he continued moving from position to position encouraging his men. He maintained constant radio contact wit the battalion commander and kept him informed of the situation, as well as receiving operational directives and information on available supporting fire. When the enemy positions were silenced, Captain Barofsky refused evacuation and aided in caring for other injured personnel. His actions were instrumental in the defense of the firebase. Captain Barofsky’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
