The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Juel Gary Droubay (ASN: )F-107644), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Captain Droubay distinguished himself by gallantry in action on 14 November 1967, while serving as an Advisor, 3d Regiment, Army of the Republic of Vietnam, outside Dak To, II Corps, South Vietnam. On that date, the battalion was on a mission of locating the 24th Regiment, North Vietnamese Army, and holding it until other forces could be deployed to destroy the enemy unit. Captain Droubay was moving with the lead company when it came under heavy small arms, mortar, and rocket fire. With no thought for his own safety, Captain Droubay exposed himself to the hostile fire to encourage his counterpart to deploy his troops. The company then swept through the enemy outpost line and found itself pinned down by grazing fire from two heavily bunkered North Vietnamese companies. Without hesitation, Captain Droubay moved through the murderous fire to a vantage point less than 100 meters from the enemy where he called in and directed air strikes. Captain Droubay’s action succeeded in holding he hostile forces until additional friendly units arrived and defeated them. Captain Droubay’s conspicuous gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
