Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), General Orders No. 4004 July 14, 1967)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert Fielding Radcliffe (ASN: OF-104967), United States Army, for gallantry In action. First Lieutenant Radcliffe distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 31 May 1967, while serving as a Platoon Leader with Company C, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during combat operations near An Qui, Republic of Vietnam. When his platoon came under intense enemy automatic weapons fire from all sides and was pinned down, First Lieutenant Radcliffe, with complete disregard for his own safety, exposed himself to the withering fire to lead his men against the hostile positions. Throughout the fierce battle he expertly directed supporting tanks, led his men against the enemy bunkers, personally assaulted several bunkers with hand grenades, and assisted in evacuating the wounded. His courage in the face of a numerically superior force inspired his men to rout the enemy. First Lieutenant Radcliffe’s personal bravery and aggressive leadership are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
