The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Armor) John Karl Lyons (ASN: OF-104879), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Troop C, 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, In action on 30 June 1966 in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Second Lieutenant Lyons’ unit was attacked by a Viet Cong regiment. As the action began, the first platoon came under heavy fire and sustained three killed in action and seven wounded. Second Lieutenant Lyons took charge of the medical evacuation and remained on the scene until the last man was evacuated. Responding to a call from the third platoon, Second Lieutenant Lyons with his platoon started up the road. Although under intense fire, he continued forward until he made contact with the friendly elements. In this location, he continued to lay down a heavy base of fire while assisting in the evacuation of the friendly wounded. Reacting to a call, he again started forward to pick up an infantry company. Having brought them to the area, he directed counter-assaults against the Viet Cong. After the battle, he directed sweeping operations in the near jungle and helped to organize the defensive posture for the night. Second Lieutenant Lyons’ unquestionable valor in close combat against superior hostile forces is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
