Headquarters, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, General Orders No. 945 (April 19, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) William Michael Millerlile (ASN: 0-98849), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Captain Millerlile distinguished himself by gallantry in action on 6 February 1968, while serving as the Cadet Corps Advisor, Vietnamese National Military Academy, Dalat, Republic of Vietnam. On that date, Captain Millerlile was serving as the advisor to a Vietnamese force comprised of elements of the 798th and 114th Regional Forces Companies during their attack on an estimated platoon of Viet Cong located in a high school. When the friendly forces were pinned down by intense automatic weapons fire, Captain Millerlile raced alone up to the fully exposed corner of a nearby house and placed M-79 grenade fire on the enemy positions. Even though this action drew concentrated enemy fire, Captain Millerlile continued to fire until his and supporting fire from the Vietnamese troops behind him drove the enemy back. After the gate to the school was in friendly hands, fierce enemy fire was directed on that area from the administration building of the school. Again the attack bogged down, but Captain Millerlile placed devastating M-79 grenade fire on the Viet Cong located in the building, thus allowing friendly forces to move up and capture the house. When the enemy took up positions in the nearby Tower Building, Captain Millerlile took the initiative and, in full view of the enemy gunners and with absolute disregard for his personal safety, advanced to the entrance of the building. Inspired by his valor, the Vietnamese force aggressively pressed the attack and forced the enemy from the tower. Captain Millerlile’s continuous display of extreme courage and aggressive actions throughout the entire engagement were primarily responsible for the recapture of the school and its environs by government forces. Captain Millerlile’s conspicuous gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
