(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Thomas Henry Magness, III, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Magness distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as S-3 of the 2d Battalion, 32d Artillery Regiment, I Field Force, Vietnam, in action against the enemy in 1969 and 1970. The enemy mounted a furious regimental size attack on Captain Magness’ fire support base near the Cambodian border, which resulted in his position nearly being overrun. Captain Magness gallantly led his battery in a fierce resistance, fighting bravely despite overwhelming numbers of enemy, and he was himself critically wounded during the valiant defense of the fire support base. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Magness, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
