(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Thomas Francis Cartwright, United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Cartwright distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Pilot of an O-2 Aircraft of the 9th Air Commando Squadron, 14th Air Commando Wing, SEVENTH Air Force, Da Nang Air Base, South Vietnam, in action against the enemy in 1968. While flying a mission over North Vietnam, Captain Cartwright, a psychological warfare pilot, had his aircraft hit four separate times by automatic ground fire. He refused to leave the target until he had accomplished all the objectives of his mission. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Cartwright, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
