United States Military Academy Register of Graduates

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Field Artillery) David Frank Nidever, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Nidever distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Operations Officer of the 3d Battalion, 34th Artillery Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in on 31 January 1968. Major Nidever was commanding his waterborne battalion from atop a command vessel when the unit was attacked on the Roc Rung Canal. Despite constant exposure to intense enemy fire, Major Nidever returned fire with a grenade launcher. Thanks in large part to Major Nidever’s accurate direction by radio of the fire from the front and rear elements, the battalion moved successful through two ambush sites. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Nidever, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
