(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain James Myron Kirwin, United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Kirwin distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Pilot of an O-1 Birddog aircraft and as a Forward Air Controller, in action against the enemy in 1966. Captain Kirwin, at great personal risk, descended to tree-top level in his O1-E to divert fire and attention from a downed American pilot. With over 150 hostile troops in the immediate area, Captain Kirwin was subjected to intense ground fire. Repeated passes at this dangerous level were made with Captain Kirwin firing his M-16 at the numerous soldiers. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Kirwin, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
