The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Robert G. Stein, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a Platoon Leader with Company B, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Division, during combat operations near the village of Van Thien, Republic of Vietnam. When Lieutenant Stein heard that another platoon had been pinned down in the village by a large enemy force, he immediately moved his men toward the battle scene. After linking up with the engaged element, Lieutenant Stein had his men assist in recovering the wounded. After an airstrike was placed on the village, Lieutenant Stein led both platoons back into the village to secure it. As his platoons became engaged with a small enemy force, word was received that another platoon had become pinned down by an estimated North Vietnamese Army battalion. With the aid of a tank, Lieutenant Stein’s platoon broke contact and moved to the left flank of the enemy force. He then coordinated the actions of all three platoons and was responsible for the defeat of the heavily-armed enemy force. Lieutenant Stein’s gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
