    November 26, 1966

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Charles A. Field, United States Army, for gallantry in action against a hostile force on 26 November 1966 in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Field was in charge of an artillery battery which came under heavy hostile mortar fire near Dau Tieng in Vietnam. Having realized the nature of the attack, Sergeant Field, with complete disregard for his personal safety, ignored the incoming rounds and led his men to shelter. Upon receiving the order to prepare his guns for firing, Sergeant Field reacting swiftly and courageously, launched a devastating counter-barrage against Viet Cong mortar attacks. Through his exemplary leadership and sagacious fire maneuvers, his battery was able to abort a major Viet Cong artillery offensive and deal a staggering blow to the insurgents. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
