The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class James H. Cunningham (ASN: US-53421783), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 189th Assault Helicopter Company, 1st Aviation Brigade, on 6 October 1967. Specialist Fifth Class Wallace distinguished himself while giving assistance to the victims of a downed aircraft. He observed the gunship crash on take off near his position. He rushed to the burning helicopter to assist the rescuing the crew. Fragments were thrown through the air by the explosions. A fireman was struck in the head and critically injured and fell into the fire. Without hesitation and disregarding his own personal safety, he jumped into the fire, grabbed the injured fireman and carried him out of the fire and explosions to a sheltered area. Specialist Cunningham’s heroic actions in saving the life of the injured man were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
