The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Leo J. Renfro (ASN: 38567363), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 23d Infantry Divison (Americal), in action at Cebu, Philippine Islands, on 11 April 1945. Private Renfro, an automatic rifleman, was covering approaches to the Japanese positions when the enemy attacked with machine guns and mortars, supported by a heavy machine gun and two 20-mm. guns. This attack inflicted many casualties on our troops leaving a twenty yard gap in the lines of Private Renfro’s platoon. With utter disregard for his safety he remained at his position covering his sector, on many occasions standing up in his foxhole and alternately firing his rifle and throwing grenades until the enemy attack was repulsed. At day break an enemy officer lay within twenty yards of his position and at twenty yards a minimum of ten enemy dead could be counted. By his aggressiveness and complete disregard for his own safety against superior numbers Private Renfro was greatly instrumental in stopping the enemy attack.
