Ana Hays was the first woman in the U.S. Armed forces to be promoted to Flag Rank as a Brigadier General. She was the first of two women promoted within minutes of each other on June 11, 1970. She served as Chief of the Army Nurse Corps from 1967 to 1971, retiring as a U.S. Army Brigadier General.
