During World War II, George Dunaway served with the 517th Parachute Regimental Combat Team in France as a platoon sergeant. Serving in combat a second time during the Vietnam War, he was awarded the Silver Star. He became the 2d Sergeant Major of the Army, serving from 1968 to 1970. He retired in 1970, and died February 6, 2008, and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
