Headquarters, 9th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 2685 (April 24, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Robert James Jenks (ASN: US-54958383), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Jenks distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on the afternoon of 26 February 1968 while serving as a Rifleman with Company E, 3d Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. While going to the aid of another company that had become locked in heavy contact with the enemy, Specialist Jenks’ platoon came under rocket and automatic weapons fire from an unknown size Viet Cong force concealed in the treeline by the landing zone. During the assault, the friendly forces were successful in destroying all but one enemy bunker. Despite a heavy barrage of bullets, Specialist Jenks voluntarily charged the final enemy position and destroyed it with a well-placed grenade, thereby completing the mission and securing the landing zone. Specialist Fourth Class Jenks’ extraordinary heroism in close combat against a Viet Cong force was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
