Headquarters, 1st Aviation Brigade, General Orders No. 3618 (July 29, 1969

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Warrant Officer (W-1) Dana P. DeWoody, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 15 May 1969. Warrant Officer DeWoody distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions when his aircraft was hit by enemy fire and crashed, bursting into flame upon impact. Dazed by his injuries, he managed to free himself and started to leave the area, but discovered that his co-pilot was unconscious and still in the burning wreckage. Despite his injuries and still weakened condition, he courageously returned and lifted the unconscious officer over the side of the burning aircraft and dragged him to safety. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
