Michael Ryan graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Class of 1965. As a pilot, he flew 100 missions over North Vietnam during the Vietnam War, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and other awards. From 1997 to 2001 he served as the 16th Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force. (His father, General John D. Ryan was the 7th Chief of Staff of the Air Force, and retired as a 4-Star General.) Michael Ryan retired in 2001, also as a U.S. Air Force 4-Star General.
