Headquarters, 1st Aviation Brigade, General Orders No. 6585 (December 18, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Larry Allen Brown, United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the 361st Aviation Company (Aerial Weapons) (Escort), 1st Aviation Brigade, on 22 November 1969. Sergeant Brown distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions when the truck which he was driving and the three men with him were ambushed by an enemy force near Pleiku. Although seriously wounded by the first rounds fired, he attempted to drive out of the ambush; however, the passenger on his right side had to assist in taking control of the vehicle and getting it stopped by the side of the road. The Senior Noncommissioned Officer was aware that Sergeant Brown was seriously hit and came forward to the driver’s door but was hit by the enemy fire. Sergeant Brown realized that his group leader had fallen and would be left behind without help. Despite the extremely intense enemy fire and the severity of his own wounds, he courageously jumped out and carried his wounded comrade back to the rear of his vehicle. While placing him in the rear of the truck, Sergeant Brown was again hit by enemy fire. His ability to maintain his sense of duty under such circumstances and to respond effectively to the dangerous conditions which had fallen upon him, contributed immensely in saving the lives of two of the men with him and preventing one of his mortally wounded comrades from being left behind. His professionalism and devotion to duty were exemplary. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
