The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Henry Richard Brommann (ASN: 0-5334033/RA-14917674), United States Army, for gallantry in action against a hostile force on 6 March 1968 in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Brommann distinguished himself by intrepid actions while serving as Platoon Leader for the 3d Platoon of Company B, 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 11th Light Infantry Brigade, Americal Division, during a search and destroy mission in the vicinity of the village of Chi’Trung. As the platoon was conducting a sweep, one of the squad leaders fell into a punji pit. Lieutenant Brommann, suspecting further such traps, immediately warned his men to freeze in place. Disregarding his own safety, he then proceeded to move to the aid of the soldier in the pit. After freeing the squad leader, Lieutenant Brommann spotted another pit approximately four feet away and he grabbed another unsuspecting man who was about to step into the pit and pushed him to safety. While moving around the obstacle, Lieutenant Brommann detonated an enemy booby trap at the edge of the pit and was mortally wounded. Further investigation of the area revealed yet another pit which a machine gunner would have fallen into had not Lieutenant Brommann told the men to halt. The quick thinking and unselfish concern for his fellow soldiers displayed by Lieutenant Brommann saved the lives of several members of his platoon. First Lieutenant Brommann’s exceptionally gallant actions and personal sacrifice were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division, and the United States Army.
